Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 1 pound pizza dough (store-bought or homemade), room temperature
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (divided) 2 tbsp for brushing before baking, 2 tbsp for finishing
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced (about 1 tablespoon)
  • 1/4 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese, plus extra for sprinkling
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • All-purpose flour for dusting the work surface

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment or a silicone mat.
  2. In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of melted butter with the minced garlic and set aside for later brushing.
  3. Reserve the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter for finishing the knot hearts after baking.
  4. Lightly flour your work surface and stretch the dough into a rough rectangle. Cut the dough into 12 equal pieces.
Shaping
  1. Roll each portion into a 6-inch rope about the thickness of your thumb.
  2. Take a rope and tie it into a loose knot, then gently press the knot into a rounded heart shape.
Baking
  1. Arrange the shaped knot hearts on the prepared baking sheet, leaving 1 inch between each.
  2. Brush the tops with the garlic-butter mixture prepared earlier.
  3. Lightly dust each knot with Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Add a teaspoon of grated Parmesan to the top of each knot before baking.
  5. Bake at 400°F for 12 to 15 minutes, until golden brown and puffed.
  6. Remove from the oven and immediately brush with the remaining 2 tablespoons of melted butter.
  7. Sprinkle the tops with the remaining Parmesan and chopped parsley.

Notes

For a flavor boost, stir 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest into the finishing butter. If dough is too sticky, chill for 5 minutes and dust hands and surface lightly with flour.
